モナシュ大学はオーストラリアの研究重点8大学”Group of Eight”に属する総合大学。世界三大大学ランキングでは総合順位100位以内をキープし続けている。モナシュ大学という名前は、オーストラリアの100ドル紙幣の裏側に描かれている人物ジョン・モナシュ将軍にちなんでいる。
校訓は、ミケランジェロの言葉 Ancora imparo（私はまだ学んでいる）。オーストラリアで最も学生の数が多く、約3割が留学生。
